Having secured the services of the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, among a handful of other astute signings, Slot’s side have also seen names such as Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold depart Merseyside. Possessing a well-balanced squad across the board, Scholes believes Liverpool’s incomings can go one step further.
With an eye to the defence, an area that has seen Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili added to the ranks, Scholes has named Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as the next signing Richard Hughes and his team should look to make, regarding it as ‘perfect’.

Liverpool’s shrewd recruitment has meant their squad, across all departments, is well-stocked with Premier League quality players. However, as many teams have learned over the years, depth is key. With the number of games teams play increasing and injuries becoming commonplace, having a deep roster is a necessity for any club chasing greatness.
Having lost Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, as well as promising young centre-back Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, it seems Scholes wants Slot to replace these English defenders with another English Premier League-proven centre-back.
With Ibrahima Konate’s contract up in 2026, something Real Madrid are keeping tabs on, Scholes has named Guehi as someone Liverpool should try to recruit. Having previously been linked to Newcastle, the former Manchester United midfielder took to The Overlap to deliver his thoughts, transcribed by the Metro.
‘You [Jamie Carragher] mentioned at the start of last year a left-sided centre-half. Palace fans won’t be happy, but I think Guehi is absolutely perfect for it … Are you going to spend £50m on a player who is in the last year of his contract? But looking at Guehi, he looks probably worth it to me.’

Having learned his trade at Chelsea’s iconic Cobham academy, Guehi’s first steps in the men’s game came at Swansea City, where he enjoyed two loan spells, amassing 59 appearances for the Swans. Seen as surplus to requirements in West London, Guehi made the switch to South London, joining Crystal Palace.
At a side where he has spent four full seasons, his stellar performances earned him the captaincy at The Eagles. Appearing over 150 times for his club, his form has seen him accumulate 23 appearances for England. A fantastic defender who is ready for a move to a ‘Big Six’ side, whether that team is Liverpool, is yet to be seen.
