Liverpool fans have made their feelings clear on Jeremie Frimpong after he made his Anfield debut against Athletic Bilbao on Monday. Reds supporters had plenty of football to feast their eyes on to start the week, as the Premier League champions played two back-to-back games against the La Liga side, winning 4-1 and 3-2 respectively.
Entirely different line-ups were sent out in each game, with Frimpong handed a start in the second, as Conor Bradley was not in the squad after picking up an injury that may disrupt the start of his campaign. That leaves Frimpong with a free hit to make a strong impression at right-back – and fans have reacted to his first outing on Merseyside.
Fans React to Frimpong’s Anfield Debut
The Dutchman started well against a tough opponent
With both sides fielding a stronger XI in the second game, it meant that Frimpong was handed the unenviable task of having to keep Bilbao winger Nico Williams quiet. The Spanish international has become one of the most highly touted wingers in world football, with the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona previously interested in his services.
However, Frimpong was able to more than hold his own in the battle. Across the 72 minutes he played, the Dutchman made one block and clearance, two tackles and was not dribbled past once. He also won four of his seven ground duels. Taking away the statistical data, he also passed the eye test among many, as the former Leverkusen star was seen constantly keeping pressure on Williams, who was unable to impact the game as he would’ve desired
a result, many took to social media to shower Arne Slot’s new defender with praise, with one fan saying: “Frimpong is fantastic and he’s 100% better than Trent defensively because he’s quick and actually applies himself.”
Another added: “Who said Frimpong can’t defend?? Look what he did to this man,” accompanying the comment with a photo that revealed Williams lost more duels than any other player in the match. Meanwhile, a third said: “Frimpong hates Trent so much he started tracking back just to spite him.”
