Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has recently joined an online chess training platform after losing to his 5-year-old son Teddy.
The Scottish legend was left in shock after defeat to his son who had only been playing for 2 months. In turn of these recent events. Andy Murray has joined an online class whereby he can play against bots in order to further extend his skills and knowledge.
Speaking on the ‘How to be 60’, mother and former coach Judy Murray went on to discuss how the 5-year-old “can already beat his dad and his grandpa and his uncle.”
“He’s now signed on this thing, I think it’s called Chess.com, and he is practising like crazy”
“He’s got to up his game.” If Andy Murray is to be half the chess player, he was tennis then he may finally stand a chance against his son Teddy.
Murray spoke on his recent defeat, “I enjoy the game and watching him learn and playing with him. It’s difficult losing to a five-year-old when in the middle of the game he’s asking you to come and wipe his bum, essentially”
“He’s gone to the toilet in the middle of the game and then he comes back and he’s beating me at chess. It’s humbling that for my intelligence.”
The 38-year-old has previously shared how his son had become “massively into chess” and admitted he was “really enjoying playing with him” but confessing he was “not a particularly good chess player” himself.
Since retiring back in 2024, Murray has been picking up many new hobbies, including golf. The tennis legend has been playing alongside fellow Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. Luckily for Andy, Carlos was not as good at golf as his son was at chess.
In recent months Andy Murray has also been seen in the social media space, appearing on a golf YouTube channel. The video saw popular Youtubers ‘Forebros’, face off in a scramble format against Andy and his brother Jamie. The pair fell just short, losing the video by one stroke. However, Andy’s sarcastic humour that we have often seen in interviews over the years remained ever present as he was continuously making jokes in typical Andy Murray fashion.
The pair of brothers have also appeared in other YouTube golf challenge, consisting of a game with former PGA Tour golfer Ian Poulter. This saw Andy and Ian team and take a draw against Jamie and his teammate.
It is clear to see that since retirement Andy has taken a strong interest in golf, improving his game. Something which he hopes to emulate in the world of chess, so that he can compete with his 5-year-old son Teddy.
This new chapter in Murray’s post-tennis life offers a refreshing insight into the daily life of a sporting icon. Now, he finds himself grappling not with Novak Djokovic’s serve, but with mischievous five-year-old’s unexpectedly sharp tactics on the chessboard.
While most retirees in their late 30s might be enjoying leisurely days, Murray has instead embraced the world of online learning and strategy games, continuing that competitive nature.
